SARAH WALK WHAT DO I WANT?

With a brand new single ‘What Do I Want?’, Sarah Walk fully embraces queer identity, including laying out the challenges that doing so arises. As the Minneapolitian songwriter shares with us: “A lot of things had been untapped in my writing until now, many of which deal with burdens that I’ve carried or felt responsible for, which I believe has a lot to do with being a woman and being queer.” Belonging to two groups that suffer the brute force and the oppressive powers that be can be anger-inducing, a feeling expressed through much of Walk’s writing. The source of her anger is concern around “being marginalised, being a woman, learning how to set boundaries without apology and being confident without feeling guilty for it,” and this she explores with open curiosity through ‘What Do I Want?’ She may not have the answers or the questions, but she’s ready to find both. Co-produced with Leo Abrahams (Regina Spektor, Belle and Sebastian, Paul Simon, Pulp, David Byrne, Brian Eno), the track itself is a wonderfully-produced piece of alt-pop electronica with orchestral flourishes and an The ever-increasing tempo and textural energy deals an all-encompassing sense of urgency to the listener that may just as well have them asking “what do I want?” - Hannah Thacker
